YMCA 3-Minute Step Test: Cardiovascular Assessment

The YMCA 3-Minute Step Test is designed to evaluate how quickly your heart rate recovers after exercise.

The quicker your heart rate returns to normal after physical exertion, the better your cardiovascular fitness


YMCA 3-Minute Step Test:


  1. Begin by stepping up and down at a pace of 24 steps per minute on a 12-inch step, keeping a rhythm of about 96 beats per minute, for a total of 3 minutes.

  2. Once you complete the test, measure your heart rate within 5 seconds and count your pulse for a full minute. This is your recovery heart rate.

  3. Compare your recovery pulse to the following categories to assess your cardiovascular fitness level.
